Slow Cooker Party Food

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009 | Homes | 335 Comments

As the last few months of the year roll up, everyone’s feeling the thrill of holiday season. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve—all these offer a reason to celebrate, and for most people, that means a big party with good food and great company. But with everyone getting increasingly busy, it’s hard to pull off just one good meal, let alone an entire party. How do you cook for a crowd without wasting precious hours in the kitchen? For a growing number of people, the answer is simple: slow cooker recipes.

It sounds like a paradox, but it does make sense. Think about it: with a slow cooker, all you do is chop up your ingredients, throw them in, and let the pot do the rest of the work. That leaves you free to go to work, do chores, or attend to other party details. And what’s better than coming home to hot, homemade food just waiting to be served? Whether you’re cooking for four or twenty people, you’re sure to find a solution with your slow cooker. Not sure how to do it? Here are some suggestions to help you get started.

Flavorful meats

Meat is probably the first thing you think of making in the slow cooker, and it’s not hard to see why. Slow cookers have a way of bringing out meat’s natural flavor without drying it out, as most stovetop methods tend to do. That means you don’t have to add fat, salt, or artificial flavorings just to make it taste better. For your party, try using more flavorful meats such as beef and lamb. Most slow cooker lamb recipes have less than 30 minutes of prep time, and can work both for parties and everyday meals.

If you want some variety, try spicing up your meat with natural flavors. Chicken and turkey go well with strong spices like paprika and chili, while beef and pork make the perfect match for vegetables and fruit marinades. For lamb, you can use a mix of sweet and tangy flavors—try experimenting with cumin, cinnamon, prunes and plums.

Warm side dishes

The main dish may be the star of the party, but it’s not complete without a good side dish or two. You may not think of it at first, but slow cookers make some of the best side dishes—think soups, stews, sauces and finger foods. Choose a side dishes that complements your main course. A light dish like chicken breast may go well with a heavy side like slow cooker potato soup, while roast beef or ribs might go with a light, fresh salad.

Don’t be afraid to give some variety to your side dishes. Most people want to keep the main course traditional (such as roast turkey for Thanksgiving), but choose to get creative with the sides. It’s a great way to put a twist to your menu while sticking to everyone’s old favorites. You can simply take an old recipe and change one or two ingredients—the slow cooker makes it especially easy, since all the flavors are amplified during the cooking.

Quick appetizers

Most big parties start off with a few appetizers, and your guests will probably expect it. Thick, rich soups are the most common because most holidays fall in the cold months. The slow cooker allows you to make a satisfying brew from pretty much any ingredient—just choose one that makes the perfect match. Pea soup, cream of mushroom, and cheese-topped onion soup are among the most popular. You can make them in advance the night before; the pot can keep them warm until they’re ready to serve.

For a more casual event, finger foods may be more appropriate. These are also easily made in the slow cooker, and the results are often quire satisfying. Slow cooker meatballs are sure to be a hit with kids and grownups. For something even easier, try setting up a sausage platter—just cut them up and let them cook in the pot for a few hours. Not only is it quick and easy; it’s also a lot healthier than frying or grilling.

Rich desserts

Finally, what’s a holiday dinner without a decadent dessert to finish it off? Everyone has a sweet tooth, and slow-cooked desserts are great for satisfying them without the calorie-laden cakes and pastries. Since they’re mostly made from fruit and natural spices, slow-cooked sweets pack in loads of flavor minus the guilt. Most slow cookers come with a baking attachment, so you can make all sorts of desserts—some of the most popular are apple and peach cobblers, baked custard, fruit salads, candied fruits, and even some cakes and pies. What’s more, if you make a bit too much, you can always save the rest for the next day—they make excellent slow cooker breakfast recipes!

The Basics of Dyes That are Useful as Stains

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009 | Decorating living rooms | 343 Comments

Where do dyes come from? It is well known that the animal and vegetable worlds have been the sources of materials for dyestuffs for many centuries. The development of chemistry as a science, and the wonderful discoveries in this new field, have recently brought a wealth of new material to the dyer that has  enabled him to produce all the hues, shades, and tints of the rainbow, for everything from ornamental pediment and designer window toppers to fireplace designs and accessories—and at small cost.

Chemical discoveries have come one after another since 1856, when it was found that a beautiful aniline dye could be made from coal tar. This discovery proved to be a revelation which opened the way for the making of several hundred aniline and other coal tar colors of many shades and tints. Some of these new colors have been found to be fugitive, while others are usually light proof and permanent.

In fact, many of the coal-tar dyes are known to be clearer, more brilliant, and far more permanent than were the much prized, and greatly extolled vegetable dyes that have been known and used for hundreds of years. At the present time coal tar dyes almost entirely dominate the dyestuff field. They furnish probably more than 95 percent of the material used in wood-stains for wood frames, bar rail moulding, and wood corner blocks, and seem to be driving nearly all of the highly-prized colors of our ancestors from the market.

Several very important industries of 75 years ago, such as the production of madder and indigo, have proved unprofitable, and are gradually disappearing from the world’s business. What exactly is dyestuff?  A substance which when in solution is capable of changing the hue and imparting a new and permanent color to a fiber, especially a textile fiber, is commonly called a dyestuff. Coloring matter that will change a color for a brief time only, or that can be washed out, is not classed as a dye.

The chemist thinks of dyes, both artificial and natural, as complex compounds consisting of carbon associated with other elements, particularly nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, and sulphur. Such materials or substances are sometimes known as aromatic compounds. How do mordants affect dyes? Mordants change and increase the affinity of some fibers for dyes. Their use is necessary with certain dyes especially the old fashioned vegetable colors, some of which required complicated treatments with mordants in order to make the dye “bite.”

Vegetable fibers will combine with certain tannin mordants, such as tannic acid, cutch, and sumac. Wool, on the other hand, will form lakes of color with various dyes, if it is first treated with metallic oxides, such as those of aluminum, iron, and chromium, which prepare the fibers to react properly with the dye and absorb it. Oil mordants, such as Turkey red oil, are sometimes used in fixing basic dyes on cotton. Mordants are sometimes classified under three headings:

·         Tannin mordants

·         Metallic mordants

·         Oil mordants

Although there are other names used mordants, these seem to be the most distinct types.

Choosing Your Kitchen’s Focal Point

Thursday, August 13th, 2009 | Decorating living rooms | 664 Comments

If you’ve read a few home design articles, you’ll be familiar with the concept of focal points. Every room needs that one element that draws the eye and leads it to the rest of the room. More often than not, the focal point is also what sets the room’s décor theme, or ties the rest of the elements together to give it that finished look.

In the kitchen, the need for a focal point has been more pronounced in recent years. Many design ideas for kitchens are built around a single element, which eventually becomes the focal point. Most kitchens have a natural focal point to begin with, such as a cozy corner, a bright color scheme, or stylish furniture.

But what if you’re starting from scratch and have to build a focal point on your own? Try browsing through design magazines and see which design elements first catch your eye. Chances are these could make a viable focal point for your own kitchen, simply because they appeal to you personally. Below are some ideas for kitchen focal points, and how you can make them work for your space.

A gathering area

Kitchens are increasingly turning from purely functional rooms to all-around spaces where people come together to sit, talk and relax. If this sounds like you, why not set up a little gathering space—and create a focal point at the same time? It can be as simple as setting up small kitchen tables in a corner, or something elaborate like an island counter with bar stools and a wine rack. On busy days, it can also double as an extra work surface.

Obviously, this would work best for large kitchens where the workspace takes up half or less of the room. By separating the cooking area from the rest, you also control foot traffic and therefore work more efficiently. Look around for simple, inexpensive ways to draw attention to the gathering space. For example, instead of using room dividers, define each space by using a different wall color, or installing a small overhead light over the table.

A colorful counter

New countertop materials have emerged in recent years and turned the once-humble kitchen counter into a popular focal point. This is especially true in modern kitchens, where materials like quartz and granite are highly favored. Browse through a kitchen photo gallery and you’ll notice that the focus is often on the color, texture, and patterns of the countertop, or sometimes the material itself. Some of the most popular countertop materials are soapstone, laminate, copper, and tempered glass.

To bring more attention to your countertop, try matching it with your flooring. Viewers tend to look at kitchens on both levels, so using complementary colors can highlight both elements. They don’t have to be the same material or even the exact same shade, as long as they complement each other. You can also use a backsplash to highlight the color of your counter and better match it with your wall or tile colors.

Trendy storage units

Next to countertops, cabinets and storage are the most noticeable features in the modern kitchen. Again, you can see it in any kitchen gallery: cabinets with unusual finishes, doors with intricate molding, and stylized knobs and handles. Even in a small kitchen, you can find a small corner kitchen cabinet in unique design that really sets it apart. There’s a world of designs to be explored in kitchen storage—it’s just a matter of finding the right fit for your space.

For cabinets to stand out, they should blend well with other room elements. One way to do this is to compare them against your countertop. Just like the floor, they don’t have to be a perfect match, but they do have to look good together. Look for pictures online to see which colors and materials work well side by side. Contemporary kitchens, for example, often use contrasting materials such as glass and stone, wood and metal, granite and bamboo.

Intimate lighting

Kitchen lighting has gone beyond plain illumination and become as decorative as it is functional. If you’re still using that overhead fluorescent light, it may be high time for an update. Nowadays, lighting design for kitchens comes in three levels: ambient light, task lights, and mood lights. Ambient light provides general illumination, while task lighting focuses on key areas like the sink and counter. Mood lights can be dimmed or brightened as needed to suit the situation.

Manufacturers now offer kitchen lights in a wide range of designs, from stylish overhead hangings to elegant wall sconces. The right piece can easily become your kitchen’s focal point, especially in the evenings. Look for fixtures that fit in with your theme, and make sure it’s the right shade to bring out your color choices. You can also use lights to emphasize other points of interest, such as a painting or a cozy alcove.

Platinum Walnut, Platinum Mahogany Finishes, and Bleaching Procedures

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009 | Decorating living rooms | 320 Comments

Walnut, Mahogany, and other open pored woods that need filler can be given platinum or bleached finishes by the same process that is suggested for maple. The one important difference is that these woods need a paste filler that should be applied after the coating of bleaching lacquer has dried. This means that an ordinary natural or white filler coating is given between steps Nos. 6 and 7 in the procedure.

Instructions for a Bleached and Stained Walnut Finish

Porous woods for wood frames and wood corner blocks, such as walnut and mahogany, which need paste filler, are often bleached, and then stained with a rather weak, light toned water stain, to which about one fourth of the volume in denatured alcohol is added. For some effects a bleaching lacquer is applied over the stain and under the filler. For other finishes the filler is placed on the stained wood and bleaching lacquer is omitted.

Materials Needed for Bleached Walnut-Stained Finishes:

Bleaching materials:

  • Simpson’s Two-Solution Bleach
  • Sponge
  • Sandpaper No. 2/0 and 4/0 preferably of the wet or dry type
  • Bleaching lacquer sometimes wanted
  • Water white denatured alcohol shellac or sanding sealer
  • Natural or light paste filler
  • White semi-gloss lacquer
  • Rubbing oil and fine pumice stone
  • Furniture polishing wax

For a gray-onyx-walnut finish for perhaps bar rail moulding or frieze boards, obtain a gray-onyx-walnut stain powder. For a sun-tan finish, secure a sun-tan, water soluble stain powder. Other light-toned water stains may be used for different tone effects.

Brushes for applying the bleach solutions and stain are also needed. The brushes used with the bleaches should be rubber bound and rubber gloves should be worn. The bleaching agents should not be placed in metal containers and are best stored in a cool, dark place.

Procedure for a Sun-Tan Bleached-Walnut Finish:

  1. Smooth with sharp tools, then sandpaper with No. 2/0 and finish always lengthwise of the grain with No. 4/0 sandpaper.
  2. Apply a heavy coat of No. 1 bleaching solution. After the bleach has dried thoroughly, sand the surfaces smooth with No. 4/0 sandpaper.
  3. Coat the surfaces freely with No. 2 bleaching solution, using a different rubber bound brush and wearing rubber gloves.
  4. After the bleaching solutions have dried, wash off the bleaches and, when dry again, sand the surfaces with a No. 4/0 sandpaper to remove the fuzz.
  5. Apply a coat of sun-tan walnut stain very evenly; rubbing it out just before it dries.
  6. (For a gray-onyx-walnut finish, substitute a gray-onyx stain for the sun-tan stain.)
  7. Spray a coat of bleaching lacquer over the dried stain. This step is often omitted, but it is a valuable protection if light sanding is needed over the stain.  Bleaching lacquer will slightly bleach the stain if used.
  8. Fill with a light or slightly tinted paste wood filler.
  9. After the filler is thoroughly dry, apply a coat of white shellac. Sandpaper the shellac coating smooth after 12 to 24 hours. Sanding sealer may be substituted for shellac.
  10. Two coats of white semi-gloss lacquer should be sprayed over the shellac undercoats if a spray gun is available.
  11. Rub the lacquer with pumice stone and rubbing oil for a smooth finish, or smooth with No. 3/0 steel wool and oil.
  12. Polish the smoothed finish with furniture wax and much rubbing.

Procedure after Bleaching

Wood surfaces such as fireplace accessories, designer window toppers and wood frames, in general, should be sponged off with clean water in order to remove any chemicals that have not been neutralized and which might have objectionable reaction to the wood or to the finishes which are applied over the bleaches.

The surfaces of wood which have been bleached or wet with water should be allowed to dry out thoroughly, after which they need careful sanding with No. 2/0, and then with fine sandpaper (No. 4/0).

Platinum and other very light bleached finishes are improved and kept whiter by the use of a thin coat of bleaching lacquer, which should be placed over the smooth bleached wood.

Bleaching lacquer is a first-coat finishing material that should be applied to bare wood after bleaching. It is a lacquer that has had some rather weak bleaching agent added to it in order to produce a very pale finish. Bleaching lacquer whitens somewhat, and a lighter and paler finish is produced than by the use of thin, white shellac, which is sometimes substituted for it.

In fact, bleaching lacquer when applied to smooth, bare wood (bar rail moulding, fireplace designs, frieze boards, etc.) produces an almost invisible covering. Bleaching lacquer may also be used as a mixing lacquer with shellac. The bleaching lacquer or white shellac coating over the bare wood should be very thin when used over porous woods, or the pores or cells of the wood will be filled to such an extent that paste filler will not find proper anchorage.

The procedure for finishing bleached woods after the coat of bleaching lacquer is similar to that usually followed for lacquered finishes, and is as follows:

  • Paste filler in light or natural for unstained finishes
  • Sanding sealer or sometimes pale white shellac,
  • Water white semi-gloss lacquer
  • An oil rub, and sometimes
  • A wax polished finish

Making the Most of Your Crock Pot

Sunday, July 26th, 2009 | Homes | 335 Comments

Crock pot cooking has made a comeback in recent years as a staple in everyday American cooking. Not only does it save you time, it also saves you a good deal of money, from letting you pick cheaper cuts to using less energy. But useful as it is, the crock pot takes some getting used to, especially if you’re well used to stovetop cooking. If you’re still getting the hang of recipes for crock pots, it’s easy to make mistakes and think slow cooking simply isn’t for you. But that shouldn’t have to be the case.

To make the most of your crock pot, it’s important to understand how it works. Also called slow cookers, crock pots cook your food over low heat for a long period, rather than a short burst of high heat as with the stovetop. This helps it cook more efficiently and evenly, and allows you to do other tasks while your food is cooking. For busy cooks with little time to spend for a home-cooked meal, slow cooking offers a nice healthy solution. Read on for some tips on better slow cooking and getting more out of your crock pot.

Choose the right pot.

Needless to say, it all starts with the right type of crock pot. Not all slow cookers are made the same, and these days, there are so many added features that it’s hard to make sense of the labels. When buying crock pots, the first thing you should look at is the crock itself. Most models now have a removable crock, which is a must if you plan on using (and cleaning) the pot every day. Pay attention to the material used; usually, the heavier it is, the better it can withstand regular use.

Size and shape are also important considerations when choosing a crock pot. Round, oval, and rectangular shapes are usually the most common. Experts recommend one with rounded edges, since they’re easier to clean and don’t accumulate residues as much. As for size, choose one that’s slightly bigger than you need for a typical family meal. That way, you have enough room for everyday cooking, plus a little extra for when you have friends or family over.

Know your meat cuts.

Meat and roasts are no doubt the most popular use for crock pots. The crock pot allows you to choose cheaper cuts of meat, since the slow cooking process can tenderize them and bring out the most of their flavor. That’s why beef and lamb crock pot recipes always work so well. However, you’ll want to avoid cuts that have a lot of fat, since the fat tends to melt away and make the dish thick and greasy.

Health authorities warn against putting frozen meat in the crock pot. The low heat is often not enough to kill any bacteria in the meat, and in fact can even make them multiply. To avoid this, make sure the pot reaches a safe cooking temperature of 140 degrees as soon as possible. If you need to, adjust the recipe so you can cook the meat on high for the first two hours, then set it to low for the rest of the cooking time.

Use more leftovers.

The crock pot is a great way to use up leftover ingredients. Whether it’s leftover turkey from your Thanksgiving dinner or last night’s pot roast, there’s always a way to make something of it in the crock pot. Soup crock pot recipes are one of the easiest ways to use up leftovers. Often, you can just throw in the leftover meat, add in a few veggies and some broth, and let it do the rest of the job.

When making slow-cooked soup, make sure not to overfill the crock pot. Liquids should only fill about three-quarters of the pot; otherwise it won’t cook properly. Too much liquid keeps the lid from closing properly and sealing in the heat, so you’ll end up with undercooked food. Also, don’t remove the lid to stir unless the recipe calls for it. Slow cooking relies on exact amounts of heat, so letting just a little heat escape can require an additional 20 minutes of cooking time.

Think beyond dinner.

Most people associate crock pots with heavy dinner recipes, but that’s not all there is to it. You can also use the crock pot to make appetizers, side dishes, lunches, breakfast, and even dessert. It’s especially useful for making breakfast, since you can just start it up overnight and it’ll be ready by the time you wake up. Some of the most popular crock pot breakfast recipes are oatmeal, breakfast casserole, cobbler, and soufflé-type dishes. Most of these recipes can be done with leftover ingredients, so it’s a nice way to use up extras from the previous night’s meals.

Preventive Steps Before and After Cleaning Marble Process

Thursday, July 9th, 2009 | Homes | 462 Comments

Cleaning marble process keeps marble at its best. But then, there would be spending needed to get it accomplished. That spending will be for a lot of things and can sometimes be more than your liking. However, that can be minimized if you can prevent marble damages.

It cannot be denied that cleaning marble can sometimes be a hard work especially if there is a severe damage to treat. Along with that, a great deal of your time and money will be needed to get it effectively implemented. Unless you would be willing to accept unsatisfactory effects, then you can cut what you have to spend.

As others would say, prevention is better than cure. And that can be well applied in cleaning marble not just in terms of money and time but also in terms of what it can do to the marble surface. It can save you from having to spend too much money for a marble cleaner and time for executing the process. Apart from that, it can save the marble from any irreversible damage.

All in all, prevention is indeed better than having to treat marble damages which may be in the form of stain, scratches or markings. With its benefits, you have more than enough reasons to carry out preventive steps. And those steps are the following.

  • Set a regular cleaning schedule. You can use a lukewarm water for this. Aside from keeping dust away, this can also be used to inspect the surface for any hidden damage enabling you to take an immediate move to prevent further damages.

  • Have the surface sealed. This minimizes marks and scratches on the surface. It also prevents stains from penetrating deep into marble.

  • Use pads under pots and other kitchen appliances placed on a marble counter to prevent scratches from the contact. This also keeps the heat from hot pans and pots from damaging the marble. For preventing markings on marble floor, using a cover under or on legs of furniture is also recommended for the same purpose of decreasing scratches.

  • Place doormats on door ways and other heavy trafficked house areas. It is to reduce sand and debris from going around the house preventing etching and marking into the marble flooring.

  • Do not use knife directly into a marble counter as it can easily scratch its surface.

  • Avoid spilling an acid-based solution on a marble surface. They can cause discoloration and marking to the surface. Even the use of a acid-based cleaning product can also cause damage instead of help. Perfect example of it is vinegar and lemon juice so you must refrain from using them.

To effectively complete a marble cleaning, there are things needed to be spent. Without them, the process can’t be finished nor can it be started. However, whatever those that you have to spend can be reduced if you can prevent marble damages.

Steps to Do-it-yourself Rust Removal

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 | Homes | 381 Comments

Rust removal is a process. And just like any other processes, it is composed of steps that must be carried out. Generally, how you implement each of those steps affects its end result. It can either be of help in making it effective or a contributor to making it a failure.

Rust can actually damage almost all home items and not only those that are made of metal. Because of that, your home is an open target to rust attacks. And so, you must always ready yourself to implement rust removal even to the slightest rust development. Doing so can save your properties from its damages. But what are those damages?

Well, basically, rust eats metal away. They transform iron into a flaky and dusty reddish brown material. Because of this, your metal tools, equipments or furniture can be weakened up to the point of being utterly useless if rust is not treated in the early stage. The use of those rusted items can even compromise your safety as their condition can already be considered unstable.

Apart from that, rust can also cause a reddish-brown or brown stain to occur on fabric-made items. Those items include clothing, bedding, curtains, carpets and others. Even to walls or floor made of cement or concrete, rust stain can be seen. And undoubtedly, that stain negatively alters the appearance of them.

And so to keep your items from those damages, it is but logical to remove rust. However, you should remember that each item may need additional or different step in the process so you must be very keen of what you implement. As a general guide though, here are the steps of do-it-yourself rust removal that must be carried out efficiently.

  • Look for a rust removal product – There are rust removers that can be purchased. However, there are now so many of them that it becomes quite a challenge to sort the effective from the ineffective. To narrow down the number of products that you have to check, go for those that are organic and compare the ones with great potential to determine which is better from the rest. But why green removers? Simply, it’s because they can be safe while still being effective.

  • Scrape of the surface – This can be considered as an initial rust removal. The main purpose of this is to scrub loose flaky rust from the item to be treated to enable your chosen rust removal product to penetrate directly into the damaged spot.

  • Apply the product – Use the recommended method of applying your rust remover. There are now products that can just be sprayed into the surface so you might want to consider them for an easier application.

  • Rinse and dry the item – After leaving the solution to the damaged area for a specified length of time, rinse it carefully with water and let it dry completely. Remember that rust is encouraged by moisture so to prevent it from getting wet is to lessen the possibilty of rust development.

For rust removal to produce effects, its steps must be completed. However, different items may require an altered process. Nevertheless, knowing the general steps and efficciently implementing them will be a big help in making rust removal for any item effective.

Flower Cupcakes to Complete Your Table

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 | Homes | 316 Comments

Cupcakes and cupcake decorating are the newest craze in American kitchens. From casual home cooks to professional chefs, everyone’s rediscovering their simple charm and the practical value they bring to every table. Part of this is because they’re fun to personalize. Unlike other pastries, cupcakes can be jazzed up and decorated in any number of ways. You don’t need professional experience to create your own fancy cupcakes—all you need is a basic recipe and some cool cupcake ideas. If you’re a beginner, one good way to start is to make flower cupcakes.

Flowers are probably one of the oldest and most common designs for cupcakes. But that doesn’t mean they’re out of style—in fact, the reason they’re so popular is that they never get old. Whether it’s a birthday party, wedding, anniversary dinner, or just a regular meal, flower cupcakes never fail to brighten up the table. And the best part is that they’re very easy to make. If you’re feeling creative or simply want to spice up your desserts, here’s a quick guide to making flower cupcakes for your next meal.

Start with a simple frosting.

Cupcakes and frosting always go hand in hand. It’s what sets them apart from similar desserts such as muffins and cakes. And in decorating, it’s also what sets the tone for the rest of your design. For flower cupcakes, the best thing to use is chocolate cupcake frosting. The rich brown color makes a nice backdrop for bright-colored flowers, and you can even make it look like soil for a more realistic effect. Just add some chocolate flakes or leaf toppers and you’ve got a cool garden theme.

Of course, as a perk, it’s tasty and goes with almost any cupcake flavor. It’s also very easy to make—you can whip up your own chocolate buttercream with just some butter, powdered sugar, and cocoa powder. You can also make a richer ganache frosting with dark chocolate if you think it will work better with your cupcake. Most recipes take only five to ten minutes, so you can even make it while your cupcakes are in the oven.

Use toppers for a quick finish.

Cupcake toppers are hands down the easiest way to decorate your cupcakes. Usually made from icing sugar, they come in all sorts of colors and designs to suit every occasion. Some stores even carry seasonal packages where each topper is designed to a theme (such as a birthday or Christmas). If you’re not feeling too creative or are simply strapped for time, an edible flower cake topper is certainly your best bet.

Flower cake toppers are among the most varied in the market. At the store, you’ll see pretty much every kind of flower, from roses and daisies to sunflowers and daffodils. Depending on the size, you can use several small flowers per cupcake or just use a large one for each. The standard size for toppers is about one inch, which should be enough for most cupcakes. You can also mix and match them—the more creative you are, the better it’ll turn out!

Expand your theme.

Flowers look great by themselves, but if you have the time, why not take the extra step and create an entire garden theme? This works well for large parties where you’re serving a big batch of cupcakes. You can even use it to set the theme for the rest of the event, or tie the existing theme together for a more unified look. Whatever the purpose, it won’t hurt to get a bit creative with your flower decorations.

One thing that goes well with flower cupcakes is a butterfly cupcake decoration. Fancy and colorful, it’s the perfect partner for a flower cupcake arrangement. Use any color you like, or try to match or contrast the color of your flower cupcakes. Put them together on a large platter and you’ve got the perfect finishing touch for a young girl’s birthday party!

Arrange them creatively.

No matter how well you design your cupcakes, it’s not worth much if it doesn’t get the attention it deserves. That’s why it’s just as important to present your cupcakes well as it is to make them look nice. Instead of just putting them in a bowl or tray, look for a nice platter that complements your designs. Or if you have enough cupcakes, arrange them on a cake board and use them as a centerpiece.

Something simple you can do is to make a bunch flowers cupcake decoration. Just decorate each cupcake as an individual flower, and arrange them on a tray to look like a little bouquet. Simply paint on the stems and leaves, and maybe tie them together with a colored ribbon. It’s pretty easy and doesn’t even require experience—but the results are more than worth it!

Cleaning the Walls Before You Decorate

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 | Decorating living rooms | 326 Comments

To do this you will require a bucket of clean warm water and a suitable wiping implement, such as an old distemper brush; alternatively a piece of coarse cloth can be used to do this or, better still, a decorator’s sponge can be brought into use for cleaning off old soluble finishes. It is necessary to change the water very frequently during this part of the work or, at the end of the job, instead of completely removing the old coating of distemper or whitewash, the amount of matter in the washing water will thinly coat the surface instead.

The best way to do this part of the job is to divide the ceiling or wall into sections of convenient size that can be tackled in one go and clean off each section vigorously. It might help to leave posters, laser cut metal, and metal wall décor up on the walls and home goods in place in areas that you have not yet gotten to. This way, the bareness of the room will not seem overwhelming and discourage your work.

First wash the section of ceiling or wall with clean water and soften the old material, then if a distemper brush is being used, “scrub” the surface with the flat of the brush, finally rinsing off the area being decorated, then wiping it dry and clean. This part of the work can be very messy and it will be advisable to wear old clothes or suitable protection such as overalls or apron and an old hat. If you chose to leave up any kind of wall hanging, make sure you are extra careful.

Laser cut metal wall décor and any kind of metal art (sculptures and the like) is relatively easy to clean, but a canvas painting or piece of woodwork can easily be ruined by a renegade droplet of solvent. If the old wall surface is washable distemper it is not necessary to completely remove it but it should be vigorously washed to remove any loose flakes and after the wall or ceiling surface is dried out it should be scoured with a medium coarse grade of glass paper.

To prevent scratching the walls, use a waterproof grade of glass paper before wiping the walls dry after washing. The walls and ceilings of a room that have been papered should be cleaned right down to the plaster. If it is planned to distemper a room, this can be done over the old paper but in many cases the dampening of the old paper will cause it to loosen, perhaps some time after the job is finished, and the amateur decorator will find that the old paper sags and droops. If this is a problem, you can rearrange your wall décor.

Metal wall art and large metal sculptures do a fantastic job of grabbing attention away from these defects, or even masking them. In some cases where there is any very great contrast of colors between the old paper and the new covering of distemper, the darker colors may show through. As a general rule it is always best to clean the walls and ceilings right down before distempering or repapering them.

Valentines Day Table Settings

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009 | Homes | 254 Comments

Valentine’s Day is all about spending time with the people you love, whether it’s friends, family, or a special someone. And more often than not, we get together over food: after all, no event is complete without a good meal. But while planning the meal is part of the occasion, few people think about table settings. Dining may be central to the event, but a well-set table can make all the difference between a run-of-the mill dinner and a romantic evening for both parties.

A Valentine’s Day table doesn’t have to be extremely fancy or expensive, but it has to be a notch above your everyday décor. One or two small changes can make a big difference in the look and feel of the event. You can use new dishes, make a creative centerpiece, or light a few candles to change the mood. Read on for some simple ways to set the perfect Valentine’s Day table.

Choose a nice tablecloth

As with any other event, it all starts with a nice tablecloth. Plain white or ivory may work for a more formal setting, but since Valentine’s Day dinners are usually more casual. If you want, you can go for something more decorative, such as a lace tablecloth, or a more appropriate color such as red or pink. Some stores also use seasonal décor ideas, so you can also find Valentine’s Day tablecloths if you want something patterned.

Remember that your tablecloth serves as the backdrop for everything else on your table. If you’re using a non-neutral color such as red, make sure you have pieces that can go with it. Bright-colored cloths work best with more muted tones, and vice versa. If you put in too much color, your table will look loud and tacky—great for a birthday party, but definitely not for a romantic dinner!

Follow proper table setting rules

You don’t have to use special plates and bowls for every course, but it won’t hurt to add a touch of formality to your table. This can be as simple as using a different set of plates and cutlery. If you have some fine china and silverware, now’s the perfect time to use them. Look for Valentine’s Day table settings online and try to recreate them on your own table.

If you’re confused by all the table setting rules, just keep in mind that they’re designed to help guests eat more comfortably. The key is to put each piece where you will naturally reach for them. One good rule to follow is to put the silverware on either side of the plate from the outside going in, in the order that they will be used. For most dinners, the order is usually appetizer, main course, and dessert.

Add a few table accessories

Once everything’s in place, it’s time to add little accessories to give the table a more personal touch. One of the easiest table accessories is the napkin—you can use a paper or cloth one, although the latter has a more formal feel to it. If you have some napkin rings, you can simply wrap the napkins around them. If you don’t, try some creative napkin folding—it’s fun, and it’s a nice way to add interest to your table.

If it’s going to be a big party, you can also try making personalized place cards. This helps make the event more intimate, and your guests will certainly appreciate the effort. You can make them yourself with some colored paper, or buy ready-made ones from gift shops. For family events, you can have your kids help out and turn it into a fun family activity!

Set the mood with candles

There’s a reason why candles are often associated with romantic dinners. Whether it’s a single tall candle or a several small tea lights, a romantic candle centerpiece never fails to create that nice relaxing mood. Depending on how you place them, you can make the place dim and intimate, bright and cheerful, or classy and elegant.

Most companies also offer candles made specifically for Valentine’s Day. Usually colored or decorated with patterns, they can make the perfect unifying element for your Valentine’s Day décor. Scented candles also work well, although it tends to be washed out by the smell of the food.

Finish off with a centerpiece.

Finally, no table is complete without a nice centerpiece to complete the theme. Flowers are easily the most popular choice for Valentine centerpieces—you can put them in a tall vase at the center of the table or sprinkle little buds over the tablecloth. Roses are traditional, but you can also look into tulips, orchids, and other less-common but equally attractive blooms. A nice bouquet of wildflowers can make a cheap table centerpiece that’s still stylish and conveys the right message.

Getting Creative With Easter Cupcakes

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009 | Homes | 374 Comments

Cupcakes have always been a popular snack for everyone, but few people realize that they could work for parties as well. Think about it: since they’re just miniature versions of cakes, they have pretty much the same flavor but in smaller, more manageable portions. That makes it easier to portion them, as it ensures that everyone will get a piece. Their size also allows you to decorate them any way you want, for any occasion and for any party theme.

For example, if you’re planning an Easter party, you can finish off a traditional meal with a nice cupcake dessert. Decorating them is a lot easier than it looks—all you need is some frosting, a batch of cupcakes, and a bit of creativity. They cook much faster than regular cakes, so you’ll have more than enough time to attend to other dishes and details. To help you get started, here are some cupcake decorating tips you can use this Easter season.

Cupcake flavors

Most cakes can easily be converted into cupcake recipes, so your choices are practically endless. If you want to be safe, you can go with classic favorites such as chocolate or vanilla, which are always a hit with the kids. If you’re feeling more experimental, try less common flavors like carrot, blueberry, or even fruitcake. You can even bake more than one flavor, so that your guests will have some variety—about two to three different flavors should be enough.

You don’t even have to bake them yourself. If you’re really pressed for time, you can just buy some ready-made cupcakes and personalize them with decorations. Most bakeshops carry decorating kits, so just pick one up and let your creativity guide you. With the right designs and techniques, there’s no way your guests can tell they’re store-bought cupcakes!

Frosting tips

Frosting adds color to your cupcakes and often serves as the backdrop for your decorations. There are lots of easy frosting recipes available, depending on the kind you want to make. Most of them involve egg whites, cream, butter, and some kind of flavoring (such as chocolate). Again, if you don’t have time to make some, you can just get it ready-made—most groceries carry some ready-made plain buttercream.

Since Easter is a festive holiday, you’ll most likely need more than one color for your frosting. What you can do is divide your plain frosting into portions and add the colors you need to each one. It’s best to work with one color at a time so they don’t get mixed up, or use a different spatula for each color.

Decorating ideas

Bunnies: Easter bunny cupcakes are quickly gaining popularity, and the reasons are obvious. As one of the most visible symbols for Easter, bunnies never fail to amuse kids and adults alike. Most people would go for a bunny-shaped cake, which they either have to make themselves or order for a much higher price. But with bunny cupcakes, you can make them just as attractive without spending as much.

You can make bunny designs by spreading some white or cream-colored frosting over your cupcakes, and using candies for details like the eyes, ears, and nose. Use whatever toppings you have lying around—chocolate candies works well for the eyes, while pinched marshmallows can be used to make the extended ears. If you have some extra frosting, you can even make patterned rabbits.

Easter eggs: No Easter party is complete without colorful Easter eggs. But why not make it a theme for your Easter cupcakes as well? Easter egg cupcakes add an instant splash of color to your table. When properly arranged and positioned, you can even use them as a centerpiece and the focal point of the whole party. It takes a bit of work to put all the colors together, but the results are more than worth it.

For a really eye-catching design, frost the cupcake in different colors to make an Easter pattern. Remember to work with one color at a time so they don’t get mixed up. Use a fine icing tip to get in more intricate details. If this is too hard for you, you can also make a nest cupcake—use cereal or chocolate shavings to make the twigs, and put in two or three Easter egg candies. Choose the most colorful ones to contrast against the brown backdrop.

Cupcake toppers

Finally, finish off your easter cupcakes with seasonal toppers. Toppers are small, usually edible decorations you put on top of your cake. Not only does it give guests an extra sweet treat, it also helps tie your cupcake theme together. Most shops offer toppers for every occasion, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding Easter cake toppers for your party. Some of the most popular designs are Easter eggs, bunnies, lambs, and party hats.

Choosing The Right Landscape Contractor

Monday, April 13th, 2009 | Homes | 524 Comments

Which of us has not driven through a neighborhood at one time or another and come upon a lawn that immediately caught our attention, causing us to think, wow, I would love it if my lawn looked like that!  The lack of skill or time prevents many of us from enjoying the lawn of our dreams.  A trained landscaper can be a great blessing when it comes to resolving this issue for you.

After the decision is made to hire a landscaper, the next question is, which one?  Improving your landscape will serve to increase the value of your home and could result in a 100-200% return on the financial investment you put into the landscape work.  Consequently, the individual/company you choose is of utmost importance.  Here are some thoughts to keep in mind as you make your selection:

What do you want to do?  The term  landscaping incorporates more than just putting a few plants into the ground.  Such things as building decks or patios and installing irrigation systems, night lighting and retaining walls also are involved in that process.  Consequently, before you select any landscaping companies, determine what you want to do.  Next, decide who will do what.  Will the landscaper be responsible for everything, or will they put in the irrigation system and you put in the plants?

Do your homework regarding the company itself.  Find out how long they have been in business and what level of expertise and/or education the employees have.  Ask for references.  Visit some of the company  completed designs and landscaping ideas and ask if there are some in the process you can visit as well.

Many states require a landscape company to have a license.  Find out if your state does and if so, check to make sure the company you contact has one, and that it is current.  Does your state also require other certification?  If so, check for that as well.

Insurance is a big word in everyones  vocabulary now-a-days  both liability and worker  compensation  when it comes to hiring a contractor of some sort.  Ask for proof of insurance from the company.

Affiliations.  Is the company affiliated with any trade organizations, such as Tree Care Industry Association (formerly National Arborist Assoc.), or American Nursery & Landscape Association.  Membership in an organization such as these may reveal the company aspires to a high level of quality and professionalism.

Needless to say, each company has to start somewhere.  Years ago Microsoft was first a dream in the mind of Bill Gates and friends and had its start in his garage before becoming the mega-giant it is today.  The same is true for landscape companies.  There are some really great little guys out that with aspirations of becoming a future Microsoft of the landscape industry.

Does your project mainly center around putting out some new plants or having someone mow the lawn on a regular basis? If so and you are friends with a budding young landscaping designer who wants to branch out and blossom in the field of landscape artistry, consider giving him a chance.  Begin by asking for references, then discuss the project in depth to be sure both of you are on the same page as to what is expected.  Finally, draw up a written contract.  Your budding botanist may not be the next Luther Burbank, but then again  you never know.  Either way, this hardworking entrepreneur will learn some valuable lessons about establishing and operating his own business and you will gain some great help at a much lower price than a seasoned professional would charge.

Guarantees.  What type of guarantee does the company offer?  Will they replace plants which die shortly after being put in the ground?  What about hardscape items?  Suppose the retaining wall they build develops some major cracks or collapses?  What will they do with regard to repair or replacement?  Consider asking the company to add maintaining the hardscape structure(s) for one year after completion of the project to the contract.  This way, if problems do result shortly after completion of the project, they can be attended to in short order.

Do your homework when it comes to choosing the correct landscaper and you will enjoy the beautiful results for years to come.

What are the Different Types of Life Insurance?

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009 | Family name | 491 Comments

Life insurance is a contract that you sign with an insurance company so that in return for the premiums you pay each year, the insurer agrees to pay a set amount of money to your beneficiary if you die during the term of the policy. The different types of life insurance are divided into two different classes, which are further subdivided into different types of policies.

Term Life Insurance

Term life insurance is basically temporary life insurance that you take out for a specific number of years. You pay a premium for each year of this term.  You do not accumulate any cash value in this type of life insurance and you do not gain any monetary benefit from it as long as you are still alive.

The typical term of such a policy is between ten and twenty years, but you can take out five year policies or for a term as long as thirty years. Generally, though, term life insurance policies end at age 75.

A term life insurance policy becomes invalid when the term expires. This means you no longer have life insurance after this date. If you do not want to have to start shopping for a new policy and possibly need a medical examination, you should choose a guaranteed renewal policy so that the company guarantees that you can renew the policy for an additional length of time when the term is up.

This renewal does not depend on you being in good health and if you have developed a medical condition during the previous term, this will not hinder you from taking out a new policy.

You also need to look for level term insurance, which means you pay the same amount of premium for the life of the policy and there is no change in the amount of death benefit that you choose at the beginning.

Permanent Life Insurance

Permanent life insurance remains in force until you die or stop making the premium payments. The only reason the insurer can cancel the policy is for fraud. There are three different types of life insurance in this category – whole life insurance, universal life and endowment.

Whole life insurance has the same premium for the policy for your whole life and builds a cash value into the policy at the same time. You can change the amount of the benefit at any time, but this will incur higher premiums.

You receive dividends on this type of life insurance, but they are generally not high. Critics of whole life insurance say that you can make more money by using a savings account and earning money from the interest.

However, you can access the cash value by means of a loan. You do not have to pay back the loan, but if you choose not to repay the money, this will decrease the amount of the death benefit.

Universal life insurance is similar to whole life insurance in that it builds cash value, but the premiums and death benefits are more flexible. The amount of premium you pay adds to the cash account as a portion of each premium is deposited into this account.

The life insurance company also pays interest on this account at a rate decided by the company and changes with the market interest rates. If you have enough money built up in this cash account, you can discontinue making your premiums and still have the protection of life insurance.

Endowment

This is a universal life insurance policy in which the cash value can build up to the point where it is equal to the amount of the death benefit at a certain age. The premiums for this type of policy are very expensive because you pay the premiums for a shorter period of time.

Rust removal Products: Five Tips to a Rust-Free Home

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009 | Homes | 296 Comments

There are so many factors that can cause rust but the main reason why it forms is when iron reacts with oxygen. Since this is a perfectly natural phenomenon, it is quite hard to avoid rust formation. But do not loose hope. There are many ways to keep rust from forming in your precious iron items. And if it leaves stains, there are many techniques and rust removal products that you can use in order to remove the unsightly rust stains.

When using rust removal products, there are factors that you need to consider and things that you need to do in order to ensure that you are optimizing the use of rust removers. Here is a list of some of those things to consider:

  1. Clean the material

Before applying any of the rust removal product that you have purchased, make sure that the material with which you wish totreat is clean. Check the surface of the material and make sure that it is free from any form of debris. Ensuring that the material is clean will make your chosen rust remover perform better.

  1. Choose environmental friendly rust removal products.

With environmental awareness at its peak, you probably know that our planet is currently suffering from the abuses that its inhabitants have incurred into it over the past few years. That is why it is important that you do not contribute to the environmental degradation in all ways possible. It is then very important to be a responsible buyer and choose products which do not contain harmful chemicals. Choose organic rust removal products. Search online for available products and take your pick.

  1. Know the type of surface of the material that needs to be treated.

Before the rust removal treatment, make sure that you have familiarized yourself with the type of surface of the material that you are planning to treat. This knowledge is very important so that you can maximize the effectiveness of your rust removal product. Knowing the surface type also reduces the chances of committing errors. Different surfaces need different kinds of treatment and even different types of rust removers. What may work for one specific type of surface may not work for another. Knowing the type of surface will help you make smarter purchases.

  1. Keep materials in your home dry.

If you have paid attention to your grade school science teacher, you would know that rust forms when iron comes into contact with oxygen. Water contains oxygen (that’s why it’s commonly referred to as H20). It is then crucial to keep materials with iron in your place away from water. Keeping them dry will highly reduce the chance of rust formation and eliminate the need for you to use rust removers. A way of keeping materials in your home dry is to place them in wooden boxes. Also make sure that they are kept from places that may accumulate dew and moist.

  1. Monitor the materials that have been cleaned.

It is very important that you regularly check the materials that you have already treated. Take note that even the tiniest bit of rust that remained untreated can be the source of a huge breakout. Always monitor your possessions for new rust formations and treat them right away. If you don’t, your previous rust removal efforts may just go to waste.

Good Memories: How to Make Them and How to Keep Them Alive

Monday, January 5th, 2009 | Yard work | 637 Comments

Memories are very important to everyone. This may have been exaggerated in the Bourne sequels, but it has successfully depicted the vital role of memory in our individualities. Without memories, people will not have the slightest idea of who they are.

We live by what we remember. We carry it out as we grow. Through it, we become wiser, which allows us to deal with different situations better.

As much as possible, we hold on to memories because they remind us of the good times. They also remind us of our youth, of the time gone by, and the life we lived. They remind us of how far we have come:  from the time when we were just chasing our desires to the point when we reached our dreams.

Although most of us value memories, there are those who neglect them. Some of us are too caught up with work that we forgot how good it felt to laugh with friends. One may argue that making wonderful memories are not the most important things on earth. Being able to survive is.

However, memories keep many people alive. They use this as a motivation to live. Parents think of the fun moments they had with their family and this motivates them to fight the turmoil in their lives. Those who are undergoing chemotherapy stay strong because of the fun they had with friends and family. They want to be healthy again because they hope to go back to that life. The energy contained in thoughts of friends and family members motivates them to continue the treatment. One way to stimulate positive memories is to memorialize experiences in photos or video.  Just a glance at a meaningful photo brings the memory to the fore to be experienced again.

Creating wonderful memories is essential to our well-being. It gives us a sense of purpose. Wonderful memories do not have to be grand. You do not have to tour the world with your spouse to make precious moments together. You do not have to plan every detail of it as well. Here are some ways to create wonderful memories with the people that truly matter to you:

Make sure that you spend time with your loved ones. Be certain that they take part in your schedule. Make it a habit to have meals together. You can prepare dinner with your spouse and make it your bonding moment. Keep in mind that food, fun, and love go well together.

Make sure that you have time with your kids as well. You can read them a story before they go to bed. Your kids will not be your babies forever. Cuddle them, kiss them, and hug them while they still welcome it. Although they are going to have their own lives in the future, they will surely cherish those moments.  There is a wide variety of baby frames- and child-related picture frames in which to display photos that chronicle the every day events of life as well as the milestones.

Have fun with the things you do together. You can make projects with your family or friends. When you are redecorating, you can ask them to help. You can make their contribution extra special by taking pictures of the projects in full swing. Then pick a picture frame appropriate to the group or the occasion. It will definitely remind you of their help every time you look at the display.

Communicate with them regularly. Communication is the best way to create memories together. Through it, you are able to laugh, cry, share sentiments, and bridge gaps. This will also help you get to know your partner and kids better. This will enable you to cherish past memories with them.

There are various ways of keeping memories alive. You can use your mobile phone to capture images, email them to family and friends or print them out and display them in specially chosen picture frames. You can also use the memorabilia from the event, arrange it in a box frame, and display it on your shelf. Here are some ways to make it extra special:

1.    Take photos of your activity and pick your favorite. Put it in a frame while personalizing the design. You can either create the frame or purchase it. Design the frame you bought by pasting a stone you got from the hike, or a shell you got from the beach. You can also add a caption about the activity or about the picture. You can hang it on your wall, or simply place it on your desk.

2.    Aside from photos, you can also take videos of the activity. You can upload it to your online journal or blog and share it with the people who took part in the activity. It is a fun way to remember by watching with friends when you do not have a good movie available. You could also create a slide show out of it and surely have a good laugh while watching it.

3.    Scrapbooking is also a nice way to keep memories alive. The great thing about scrapbooking is that you can include as many photos as you want. It does not even have to be expensive. Use your creativity and check out the natural materials that you can utilize. A photo cut from a magazine could create a great background for your own photo.  You can also use small twigs and leaves for more drama.

It is no longer difficult to keep memorable events in your life alive. The technology today makes it easy. You can even personalize the presentation using your creativity.

In order for you to capture wonderful memories, you need to create them. The pictures and videos are only reminders of wonderful memories. You can put pictures in a simple or imported picture frames, but what really matters is the story behind it.

Keeping Your Wedding Memories Alive

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008 | Yard work | 343 Comments

At some time most everyone goes through the process of deciding to become officially unified with his or her partner. Marriage is indeed one crucial aspect of a person’s life. It is the time when one has to let go of his or her selfish ways and commit himself or herself to a more mature responsibility, and thus, more challenges in life. Although different cultures have different means of presenting marriage, it is undeniable that everyone shares the same feeling that is, to cherish that happiness and fulfillment of finally being one with the person you truly love. This is one reason why wedding picture frames are considered hot items any time of the year, for love truly does not recognize any season.

Couples want to preserve every detail of their wedding ceremony. They have usually worked for months identify all important factors, sort things out and come up with a great wedding plan. And even if wedding planners are employed, couples cannot help but participate all throughout the decision-making process. They want to make sure that everything goes well on their big day as well as during all related activities. Everything is directed towards the perfect portrait. And as these people try to make everything appear seamless, they want every detail recorded for them to look back on in the years to come. No wonder professional photographers and cameramen find themselves busy in all seasons. They have accustomed themselves well to meet the demands of their clients with regard to the event coverage. And what they simply do is to provide an output that can be repeatedly viewed through a DVD player or in wedding photo albums.

Considering this great enthusiasm to have every moment documented, couples devote significant time to their preparations. They not only commit themselves in laying out the basic plans but also exert conscious effort in doing the rehearsals and putting the right people in place. They may contract with dressmakers, event coordinators as well as caterers. As for the wedding coverage, it can always be assumed that many guests will be bringing in their cameras and taking photos to share. The bride and groom can also use their own digital cameras and ask a relative to record videos and take pictures of the event. But the majority prefers to hire professionals to do the documentation for them. Even though their level of equipment can be readily bought by any individual, professionals remain superior due to their extensive training and experience in the field. Families of the engaged couple also prefer to hire such service so they can be assured of the best pictures.  A gift idea that is sure to be appreciated is to select one of the best photos and present it a year later in a great anniversary picture frame.

In addition, professional photographers can take unique angles and create effects that would not be achieved by average picture takers, but that express the personalities of the couple involved. Their field of expertise does not only include taking pictures and filming important details but also covers digital enhancement, organization, photo journalism and creative compilation. They are experienced in identifying which areas to emphasize and they know how to effect a dramatic environment while doing so. They will do the necessary processing and development of the images, as well as editing the video to make it artistic and expressive, and thus, be able to capture what has actually transpired and make it into a precious keepsake. As a result, they come up with a creative portfolio that will remind couples of their happy feelings on that day. And they do not only comprehensively take pictures of the different activities during the ceremony and the reception, but they also provide emphasis on the members of the entourage, as well as the accessories used in the wedding.  Some brides may wish to focus one shot on their engagement or wedding ring and display the photo in a wedding ring picture frame.

Included in the service that they provide is the conceptualization of the whole project that really relates one event to another.  The theme or the motif of the occasion will be accented in the presentation of the photographs and video clips. So the basic principle is to hire a professional in order to keep your memories alive. Couples only need to make the necessary preparation, which should include the proper selection of a competent photographer that will ensure you get the high quality called for by the occasion. It is critical to examine previous work by the photographer before making a final selection.  With all of these points taken care of, you can be confident that you can relive your wedding day as you flip on the pages of your wedding picture album or watch the video.

Allergies are considered to be a thief in the night, suddenly springing up unnoticed and causing the utmost fright to a poor individual.  For those who have oversensitive immune systems, substances that are found to cause an allergic reaction will need to be checked if they are present in order to prevent symptoms such as asthma or rashes.  The immune system overreacts to a substance by producing antibodies and these trigger the release of histamine and other chemicals into the bloodstream, resulting in an allergic reaction.  Death is a very rare case but can happen and there are also other reactions that can be quite severe such as anaphylactic shock resulting in breathing difficulties and a sudden drop in blood pressure.

Studies have shown that natural cleaning products are much safer to use especially if there are people living in your household who are allergic to the chemicals emitted by regular cleaning products which are considered to be one of the major factors in indoor pollution.  Not only do they affect the quality of the environment indoors, these toxic products can greatly harm the well being of every living being inside your house.  Green cleaners can help you reduce the exposure to irritating or potentially toxic chemicals which many regular household cleaners contain.  These strong chemicals may be particularly worrisome if you have children or if someone in your household has asthma or other breathing problems.  At the same time, many of the ingredients in regular cleaners are made from petroleum that is a nonrenewable resource.

Just think about it, even after they go down the drain and are processed at the wastewater treatment plant, there will be some damaging chemicals such as phosphates that can greatly destroy the ecosystem when they are eventually released in the waterways.  If you are used to cleaning with such aggressive conventional cleaners, keep in mind that having a very clean house and living in a dying planet may not be so pleasant to deal with.  With this in mind, isn’t it better to use organic cleaning products for a clean home and save the planet at the same time?

Fortunately for us there are now cleaning agents that have passed the test and can be considered as very friendly to the environment not to mention to the health of everyone in the household.  These products are also free from phosphates so there will be no fear of destroying the ecosystems.  There are also cleaners that are free from nonylphenol ethoxylates which are considered to be water pollutants.  NPEs can be found in many laundry detergents and other cleaning products and can be difficult to avoid.  As water pollutants they are released into the waterways and are toxic to aquatic plants and animals.

Here are some guidelines to help you on your search for cleaners that can lessen allergic reactions.  Choose cleaning agents that are plant-based or have bio-based ingredients.  Cleaners that contain hydrogen peroxide are very effective and are also less harsh than that containing chlorine bleach.  Also keep in mind that the fewer products that you need to buy the less waste there is to see.  Multipurpose products cut the time and money in half and they are handier and easier to use.  These products are now available for you and it is now up to you if you want to save the planet.

It is said that if you want to protect the environment, you should start at home.  Even more so now that studies indicate that the environment indoors can be more polluted and toxic than the outdoors.  What is also alarming is that the presence of pollutants inside your household can have dire consequences with regards to the health and wellbeing of each and every person and animal living indoors.  The quality of the indoor environment depends largely on the presence of pollutants whether airborne or not and it is solely our responsibility as homeowners to be aware and informed of what products to use most especially when it comes to cleaning agents.   Try using green cleaning products.

A Tile Floor – Is It For You?

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 | Fabric decor | 323 Comments

Tile flooring is almost always a huge improvement to any home.  Regardless of your aesthetic, you can find a tile that will make a gorgeous floor.  A tile floor is not only beautiful but also very durable.  The only complaint people tend to have with tiled floors is that they tend to be cold.  This can easily be fixed by installing a radiant floor heating system beneath the tiles.  Not only will this keep the floor at a consistently comfortable temperature, but it will also save energy (and therefore money) on your overall heating cost.  There are several different types of tile flooring.  Following are some of the most popular.

Ceramic Floor Tiles

Ceramic floor tiles are becoming more and more common in new homes and remodels.  They come in every style and color you can imagine.  Typically floor tiles come in 18 inch by 18 inch, 12 inch by 12 inch or 6 inch by 6 inch squares.  You will also find 4 inch by 4 inch tiles readily available, but be sure to check the label carefully to see if these tiles are actually rated for floor use.  There are also smaller tiles, typically 1 inch by 1 inch or 2 inch by 2 inch, that usually come attached together on a 12 inch by 12 inch mesh.  These are installed very much like solid 12 inch by 12 inch tiles and simply require more grout work.  These small tiles are extremely popular in bathroom applications, especially for flooring in custom built shower enclosures.

Porcelain Floor Tiles

Porcelain tiles are virtually interchangeable with ceramic tiles in both surface look and installation but are slightly more expensive and tougher.  porcelain tiles consist of the same material and colorant through out the entire tile where ceramics are on colored on the surface.  Because of porcelains superior durability and through and through coloring, it can be used in some exterior applications where regular ceramic tile cannot.  Both ceramic and porcelain floor tiles come in a glazed and an unglazed version.  Glazed tiles do not need to be sealed but are often very slick.  They also offer greater mold/mildew/moisture resistance and antimicrobial properties.

Glass Floor Tiles

Glass floor tiles present apparent luxury and detail.  They are most desirable in bathroom applications where light and water both reflect and refract off the tile surfaces making them seem to sparkle as if they were encrusted with gem stones.  Many people may be hesitant to install a glass floor feeling that it may be sharp.  If you use proper materials and proper installation, glass floor tiles are no more likely to cut that any other type of flooring!  There are also glass block flooring applications.  Often these come in pre-fabricated panels engineered to hold the proper weight load.  Because glass block floor tiles will let light through, they are a great accent to an upstairs floor allowing light to pour into the first floor below.

Glass tiles often go through a process known as slumping.  Slumping is when the glass is heated allowing it to fall into a pre-made form.  Through this process stones or metallics can be set into the glass tile.  Since the glass is never actually cut and only takes the shape of its form, the edges can be very smooth.  Mosaic designs are also a very luxurious choice for flooring.  Colored glass can be set in a set picture or pattern for a look straight out of a palace.

Those concerned with living “green” will like the beauty of recycled glass flooring options.  These tiles use crushed glass bottles bonded with an epoxy to create a attractive and durable flooring surface.  One of the downsides to glass flooring is that it can be very slippery especially if it wet or if it is exposed to any type of oil.  Slumping the glass into a form that has a texture can help ease the slickness of the surface.  There are also specialty products intended for glass floors that are specifically designed to give the surface more grip.  Another con to glass flooring is that it streaks easily.  It may need to be cleaned more often than other flooring options to keep its opulence.

Terracotta Floor Tiles

Terracotta tiles are an eco-friendly durable choice for any one looking for a more rustic or south western look.  Terra-cotta comes from the Italian word meaning “cooked earth”.  They can be easily ordered from companies that still hand make each tile from natural clay and then dry them in kilns following the same process that has been used for hundreds of years or from large bulk manufacturers.

Terracotta tiles are most commonly a shade of peachy brown which can be darkened further by applying a tinted sealer but are also available in other earth tones such as grays and even reds.  They have a rough surface that is very porous and must be sealed.  Because of the porosity of the material, you must be very careful when installing and applying sealant.  If the sealant is placed on too soon while the tile is still damp from the thinset, you may end up with a cloudy finish. They are a great choice for both indoor and outdoor flooring.

If you are looking for ways to save money on centerpieces or just want to personalize your decorations, homes, parties and reception hall decorations can be created by you in just a few simple steps. Homemade centerpieces for tables set off any atmosphere you have chosen to create for your family, friends and guests.

Without question, table settings can assist in setting up an environment. The plates, glasses, silverware and napkins pull a theme together and lay out a warm welcome to everyone who sits around the table. Centerpieces bring focus to the entire setting and should always reflect the occasion, season or style of your home.

How homemade centerpieces Score Over Store Bought Versions

Personalization – Everything you make with your own two hands and creativity of thought is an expression of either who you are or of a message you wish to relate to visitors and family. Holidays, birthdays, weddings and other special occasions may guide you in making the centerpiece for your table. If you are making centerpieces for a wedding reception, you have several ways of personalizing the decoration. Using the color themes of the wedding, pictures of the bride and groom or other representations of the happy couple’s life, you can come up with something truly unique because you are the designer. Traditional holidays do not have to be all about mistletoe, Yule logs, or bunnies. When you make your own, you can add your own special spark to the entire look. Are you in charge of decorating for a high school reunion? You can use old and new photos and other memorabilia as a conversation piece and honor individual former students at the same time.

Cost - The cost for homemade decorations on tables ranges from surprisingly low to shockingly high, depending on your particular tastes and/or budget. Some of the best ideas can be put together from items you have in your own home or found at discount prices at local and online stores. Cheap table centerpieces do not have to look cheap at all. If you are someone who likes to change dcor with the seasons or loves to set an appropriate table for frequent dinner guests, making your own centerpieces instead of buying them is not only cost-effective but it also allows you to customize according to the ideas you have in your own head. You will be amazed at the common objects you can use to make an impressive piece that will appear to be much more expensive than it actually is.

Warm Environment - The dinner table is a natural gathering place for many families and friends. Whether it is for a simple family meal or a dinner party, an attractively decorated table can inspire warmth and cheer in your quality time and celebrations.

If you are just starting out in your own home, have volunteered to help decorate for a special occasion or have just become interested in decorating, the ability to make your own decorations can make it much easier simply because you will not have to pour through dozens of magazines to find the perfect centerpieces to match with your table settings or end up buying an entire set only to toss out a centerpiece that just does not fit. Putting together your own settings and centerpieces is not only fun but also satisfying.

There are thousands of floral combinations you can use to make your table sparkle! Use your favorite flowers, customize arrangements for seasons or switch out the mood with specific colors. You can use vases, glasses, bowls, candles, ribbons there are many possibilities for displaying dried flowers.

Keeping in line with a popular home dcor theme, you can create centerpieces that go along with the style of your home interior. Consider putting together your own centerpiece for a modern feel or give your table an eclectic look.

Tropical Themed Table Arrangement

Another popular theme is the tropical theme. This theme not only works great on its own but also can be combined with some other themes in a very successful and attractive way. Give your table a tropical look with tropical flowers and colors. Tropical fruit centerpieces meld nicely with practically any dcor. These types of centerpieces are also perfect for tropical theme-based parties.

If you feel you are not crafty enough to make your own centerpieces, you should know that all it takes is some practice. Start by finding ideas and instructions for putting together centerpieces you find pleasing and then expand on the ideas as you go. As with everything else worth learning, practice and ingenuity will make perfect. Before long, you will be an expert at setting beautiful tables with your own homemade centerpieces as the focal point.
